Adentro Afuera / Inside Outside is a photographic installation that documents a normalized outlet for male sexual desire in the streets of Mexico City. It explores the provisional boundaries of public and private by investigating a manufactured space of freedom based on biological and economic needs. The installation is composed of two elements: wall-hung photographs of store windows displaying men’s underwear, and a ‘puesto ambulante’ – a temporary stall common to Mexican street markets. The stall is a replica of a ‘puesto ambulante’ dedicated to selling illegally copied pornographic movies. It contains 170 DVD cases, the covers of which are a series of hidden-camera photographs documenting the environment and clientele of these pirate porno ‘puestos’.
Upon venturing to look inside the DVD cases, one discovers compact discs that bear diverse images of erect penises. These phallic images are from a scientific survey conducted by Joseph Sparling for the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. Furthermore, each compact disc contains digital images, visible only with the aid of a computer, of the testosterone hormone molecule.
