Sweat on steel

50 x 50 cm

The Molecular Unconscious is an image made by using sweat to create rust on a masked sheet of steel, resulting in a ghostly image that resembles a scan of the human brain. The Rorschach-like form, however, was created by mirroring a picture of two body-builders posing together and carefully masking the image onto the sheet of steel before spraying it with sweat. Establishing distinct ways of reading the image as both physical material and meaningful form was a way for me to explore the theories of the molecular unconscious and autopoiesis, which help to serve as a bridge for comparing human life and artworks.
