Unconscious Communication (Reodorant #3) is a plug-in air-freshener and three “refills” containing sweat. I specifically produced the sweat on three different occasions while learning about Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Jacques Lacan respectively. Referencing our evolved, unconscious capacity to communicate indirectly through pheromones in sweat, the piece explores the physical embodiment of knowledge, be it through cognitive understanding or physical creation.
In Reodorant #1, a plastic liquid de-odorant container was refilled with sweat and placed back on the shelf in the supermarket where it was purchased. In Reodorant #2, a plastic container full of sweat was used to spray the perfume section of a department store. Beyond questioning the social taboo of body odour, the series is also meant to explore the importance of context in determining the significance of an artwork.
